Don is the reason I watch Mad Men. I recently wrote a related post on my site on a related theme. Check it out:

Thanks for the feedback and links guys.

@Stuart - good post. It still isn't simple to implement and capture the mix of data and sentiment you cover, but that's one of the reasons events like Measurementcamp are indespensable http://measurementcamp.wikidot.com/

@Rachel - I didn't want to roundly hijack your superlative metaphor, so I had to think of one of my own :-)

But I think the "invisible" work of a community manager helping the community grow and meet the participants' and brand's mutual objectives "under the bonnet" and "below sea-level" can happily co-exist.

Just as well I didn't include everything community managers can do on this list, as Rachel's post includes most of what I've left out...

Thanks so much for the shout out and links - I really like your engine metaphor as well. Most people don't know exactly how it works but really critical to getting anywhere!

Useful list thanks Deirdre. Thinking about #14 I thought I'd share a recent post on ways to take the hard work out of measuring the success of your online community: http://tinyurl.com/yjuera3

Thanks for these links.

"more influential than Hilary Clinton"

"All competitors have put their advertising up for pitch since Aleksandr's arrival"

"nearly 1,000 people have signed his petition to get the word "seemples" (simple) into the Oxford English Dictionary"

Fantastic! I wonder whether Aleksandr Orlov has any political aspirations?...

Thanks a lot for the feedback Martin.

Brandjacking / social media squatting is certainly a serious issue from the POV of users being mis-led or even robbed; but as the Isakson case (and many others) demonstrate, openness and flexibility can have huge benefits, and these can flow in many directions.

Regarding CompareTheMeerkat, I saw recently that it was conceived by VCCP - not drunk ad men as PaidContent teases in the story, but a highly talented crew in a mid-sized London agency...

Excellent article! Brandjacking / Twitter-squatting is an important subject. Do we need domain name style bodies like ICANN to police usernames on social networks? Or perhaps some kind of online verification system?

CompareTheMeerkat is genius IMOH, I'm amazed at how many people talk about it day to day. But I do feel that more could be done given the character's new-found status.
