@ George,
Thanks for alerting us to your post and fuller response to this issue and to Tom's difference of opinion. It seems I misunderstood what you said at the event, so apologies for that.
I agree that the success of sites in certain places (eg. Bebo being the number one site in Ireland), etc, often seems rather serendipitous. But perhaps there *are* reasons we can fathom for the success, geographically and otherwise, of such sites (even if it wasn't in the grand plan of the creators) - all it needs is a bit more focus. I've consistently found a lot of worthwhile research and analysis in <a href="http://www.danah.org/papers/" rel="nofollow">Danah Boyd</a>'s essays. We need more people like her...
I also agree value creation shouldn't be a dirty word. But my feeling was that Sam Sethi put the point rather over-simplistically which didn't really stimulate the well-informed audience, so the lead balloon effect came into play. Elsewhere in the blogosphere there is plenty of great discussion about value creation, it just didn't get addressed in a satisfactory way on Tuesday.
@ Alan, i'm confused, what part of Ireland did you last visit? ;-)
@ James - it wasn't the same without you :-) How was Americay? Re podcasts, it was recorded but as you must be aware, NMK has no full-time staff at the minute and no internal tech resource/liaison, so the chances of the podcasts going live before new folks are recruited, say Feb at the earliest, are slim.

Another great event. Deirdre, you've done such a great job ... Chinwag is lucky to get ya.

Just to clarify a bit about "design" ... My comment/statement was meant to be a controversial. It was by design.

My point was not just about the front-end, but that said, MySpace is not ugly by design.

And no one designed Orkut to work in South America.

And Bebo wasn't designed to appeal to Irish kids.

Facebook was designed to appeal/work with university students, and they've tossed that out the window. They did (sadly) by design.

There is an incredible serendipity to the geographic/sociographic popularity of a number of social networking and social media sites. When Michael Birch emailed a few hundred people in Canada about Bebo, do you really think he had grand plans (a "design") to corner the CA market?

Re MySpace: The two biggest things that distinguished MySpace from Friendster when the two went head-to-head was the fact that, unlike Friendster, MySpace wasn't crashing all the time and MySpace let people have "Fakesters", something Friendster was totally against allowing.

Finally, a quick word about "value creation", which was another hot topic at the event ... On his blog, Tom says we should "start refusing to take seriously questions about value" as he feels the answers are obvious. I don't think they are obvious to everyone (view most of the answers we heard), so I'll keep asking about value until people start giving better answers.

I think if UK companies (and especially start-ups) want to participate in the absolute global boom that we are seeing these days, they shouldn't be afraid of things like value and ROI.

They should embrace them, almost as if by design.

More here:

Looking forward to January.
